What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein found naturally in grains such as wheat, rye and barley.
Oats do not contain gluten per se , but may contain traces of gluten because grains are often handled together in farming and production.
For most children, gluten is a natural part of the diet that is introduced when the child starts eating regular food.
When is gluten introduction recommended?
According to Swedish and European recommendations, gluten can be introduced sometime between 4 and 12 months of age , in small amounts and gradually.
It was previously believed that the exact timing was crucial to the risk of developing celiac disease. More recent research shows that:
- the amount of gluten matters
- How quickly gluten is introduced is important
- an early introduction in large quantities can be difficult for immature stomachs
That's why today's recommendations focus on caution and gradual escalation , rather than a precise start date.
What does a gentle introduction to gluten mean?
A careful introduction to gluten means:
- the child ingests very small amounts of gluten
- the introduction is gradual
- you follow the child's signals and stomach
It's not about avoiding gluten, but about giving the body time to get used to it as digestion matures.
How has Unna thought about gluten in porridge and gruel?
Porridge & Cereal from 6 months

Unnas Välling & Porridge from 6 months does not contain wheat flour . It is based on oats and corn and has:
- lower fiber content
- no added wheat flour
- a gentle composition adapted for small stomachs
This is our way of supporting a careful and safe first encounter with both grains and gluten and can be introduced at the same time as the child is introduced to other foods.

When the child is older, eats more varied food and is used to regular food, the stomach is usually better prepared. Unnas Välling & Porridge from 12 months:
- based on oats and graham flour , which contains gluten
- has a higher proportion of whole grains ( 65% whole grains )
- contains more fiber (about 2.7 g per serving compared to about 1.8 g in the 6-month version)
This variant is therefore adapted for children who are used to food and where gluten and fiber have already been introduced into the diet. For this reason, we only recommend it from the age of 12 months.

Gluten, whole grains and fiber. How are they related?
Gluten occurs naturally in many whole grain products, and whole grains provide fiber that is good for intestinal function.
For young children, however, it is wise to increase the amount of whole grains and fiber gradually , as too much too soon can affect the stomach.
Summary. Our way of creating security
At Unna, we assume that:
- all children are different
- small stomachs need time
- there is no “right” way that suits everyone
- Safety and knowledge are more important than perfect rules
Therefore, we offer:
- a mild porridge and gruel without wheat flour for the little ones
- and a more fiber-rich version with gluten for the next step
So that you as a parent can introduce gluten in the right amount, at the right pace and with safety .
